Dermal Fillers Explained: Types, Results, and What to Expect

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours using substances that work with your skin’s natural structure. Results are visible immediately, last between 9 and 24 months depending on the product and area treated, and — in the right hands — look entirely natural.

If you’ve been considering dermal fillers and want to understand exactly what’s involved before booking a consultation, this guide covers everything: the different types of filler, which areas can be treated, what happens during and after the appointment, and how to choose a practitioner you can trust.

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to add volume, define contours, or soften the appearance of lines and hollows. Unlike anti-wrinkle injections, which work by relaxing muscles, fillers physically replace or stimulate volume — which is why results are immediate and the face looks refreshed rather than frozen.

As we age, the face loses collagen, elastin, and fat. Cheeks flatten, the skin around the mouth folds inward, lips thin, and the jawline softens. Fillers address these changes by restoring structure from underneath, rather than simply treating the surface.

The Two Main Types of Dermal Filler

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most widely used type, and the gold standard for most facial areas. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body — it’s a molecule that attracts and holds water, which is why HA fillers integrate so naturally with surrounding tissue. Brands you may have heard of include Juvederm and Restylane. HA fillers are also reversible: an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve them if needed, which makes them the safest option for most patients.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers — most commonly known by the brand name Radiesse — work differently. Rather than simply adding volume, they stimulate the body’s own collagen production over time. CaHA fillers tend to be used in areas where deeper structural support is needed, such as the cheeks or jawline. They are not reversible in the same way as HA fillers, so they require a practitioner with significant experience in facial anatomy.

At Dawn Clinic, we use premium hyaluronic acid products selected on a patient-by-patient basis. Your consultation will always determine which product and technique is appropriate for your anatomy and your goals.

Which Areas Can Be Treated with Dermal Fillers?

Fillers are versatile. Almost every area of the face can be treated, and in many cases, a combination of areas is addressed in a single session to create a naturally balanced result rather than a treated look.

Lips

Lip filler remains one of the most requested treatments — and when done well, it’s one of the most natural-looking. The goal is almost never maximum volume; it’s balance, definition, and proportion. Filler can restore volume that has been lost with age, define the cupid’s bow, reduce fine lines around the mouth, or simply give a slightly fuller appearance to lips that have always been thin.

Lips are one of the most technically demanding areas to treat well. The margin for error is small, and overcorrection is obvious. This is why practitioner experience matters so much — particularly when it comes to lips.

Cheeks

Cheek filler replaces volume lost through the natural ageing process, lifting the midface and indirectly softening the nasolabial folds (the lines that run from nose to mouth). A subtle cheek treatment can take years off the face without anyone being able to identify specifically what has changed — they’ll simply notice you look well-rested.

Jawline and Chin

Jawline filler creates definition, improves facial symmetry, and can reduce the appearance of jowling by reinforcing the structure below. Chin filler is often used alongside jawline treatment to improve the side profile and bring the lower face into better proportion with the upper face.

Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines

The lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds) and from the corners of the mouth downward (marionette lines) deepen with age as the face loses volume above them. Filler placed in the mid-cheek area, rather than directly into the folds themselves, is usually the more effective and longer-lasting approach — an example of why anatomy knowledge matters in treatment planning.

Tear Troughs

The tear trough is the hollow beneath the eye that creates the appearance of dark circles or a permanently tired look. Tear trough filler is one of the most complex facial filler treatments and requires precise technique and detailed knowledge of periorbital anatomy. Not every patient is suitable — a thorough consultation is essential before this area is treated.

Liquid Face Lift

Rather than treating a single area in isolation, a liquid face lift uses a combination of dermal fillers (and sometimes anti-wrinkle injections) placed strategically across the face to create an overall lifting and rejuvenating effect. It’s the closest thing to a surgical result without surgery — and with no downtime.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Results

Your Consultation

Every dermal filler treatment at Dawn Clinic begins with a free consultation — no obligation, no pressure. This isn’t a formality. It’s where we assess your facial anatomy, understand what you’d like to achieve, review your medical history, and discuss the most appropriate treatment approach.

Dawn Richardson is an independent nurse prescriber (V300) and Registered General Nurse (RGN) with over 32 years of nursing experience and 17 years specialising in aesthetics. This clinical background means your consultation is a genuine medical assessment — not a sales conversation. If a treatment isn’t right for you, you’ll be told.

The Treatment Appointment

Most filler treatments take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the area and complexity. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand and left to take effect — most patients find the treatment more comfortable than they expected.

Filler is injected using either a fine needle or a cannula (a blunt-tipped tube), depending on the area being treated. Cannulas tend to cause less bruising and are often preferred in more delicate areas. The product is placed carefully and then moulded into position to achieve a smooth, natural result.

You’ll see results immediately, though the final outcome becomes clearer once any initial swelling has settled — usually within two weeks.

Immediately After Treatment

Some redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection sites is completely normal. Bruising is possible, particularly in vascular areas like the lips and tear troughs. Most people are comfortable returning to work or social activities the same day or the day after, though some patients prefer to schedule treatment ahead of a quiet period.

You’ll be advised to avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, and extreme heat (saunas, steam rooms, very hot showers) for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Sleeping with the head slightly elevated on the first night can help manage any swelling.

How Long Do Results Last?

This depends on the product used, the area treated, and individual factors like metabolism and lifestyle. As a general guide:

  • Lips: 6 to 9 months
  • Cheeks: 12 to 18 months
  • Jawline and chin: 12 to 18 months
  • Nasolabial folds: 9 to 12 months
  • Tear troughs: 12 to 18 months

Repeat treatments can be scheduled before filler has fully dissolved, which helps maintain a consistent result over time without requiring larger volumes.

Safety: What You Should Know Before You Book

Dermal fillers are not a regulated medical device in the same way as surgical procedures — which means, in England, they can legally be administered by anyone, regardless of training. This is changing, but the current landscape makes it essential that patients choose carefully.

In Wales, where Dawn Clinic is based in Penarth, the same caution applies. The difference between a good result and a poor one — or between a safe treatment and a serious complication — almost always comes down to the practitioner’s qualifications, experience, and clinical judgement.

What to Look for in a Practitioner

  • Medical or nursing qualifications — a practitioner who understands anatomy, pharmacology, and how to manage complications
  • Independent prescriber status — required to prescribe and administer prescription-only medicines, and an indicator of advanced clinical training
  • Experience specifically in facial aesthetics — not just general medical training
  • Clear consultation process — no reputable practitioner skips this step
  • Access to reversal agent — any practitioner administering HA filler should have hyaluronidase available on site
  • Transparent aftercare — you should know exactly who to contact and what to do if you have concerns after treatment

Dawn Richardson meets all of these criteria. As a V300 independent nurse prescriber and RGN with 17 years of aesthetics experience, she brings a level of clinical rigour that is rare in a standalone aesthetic clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers

Are dermal fillers safe?

When administered by a qualified, experienced medical or nursing professional using licensed products, dermal fillers have a strong safety record. Serious complications are rare but do exist — vascular occlusion is the most significant risk. This is why practitioner selection matters: a clinician who understands anatomy and has access to reversal agents can manage complications if they occur. Choosing an unqualified or under-trained practitioner significantly increases risk.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Most patients find the treatment manageable. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment, and many filler products contain lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) in the formulation. Lip filler tends to be the most uncomfortable area due to the density of nerve endings in the lips. Most patients describe a mild stinging or pressure sensation rather than significant pain.

What’s the difference between dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic lines (wrinkles caused by facial movement, such as frown lines or crow’s feet). Dermal fillers add or restore physical volume beneath the skin — they don’t affect muscle movement. The two treatments are often used together for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. You can read more about anti-wrinkle treatments at Dawn Clinic here.

How soon will I see results from dermal fillers?

Results are visible immediately after treatment. However, initial swelling can slightly affect the appearance for the first few days. The final, settled result is usually visible at around the two-week mark, which is why a review appointment at that stage can be useful — particularly for lip treatments where fine-tuning may be appropriate.

Can dermal fillers be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is one of the key reasons HA fillers are considered the safest option for most areas: any unsatisfactory result or rare complication can be addressed. Dawn Clinic keeps hyaluronidase on site. Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers are not reversible in the same way, and this is factored into treatment planning for any patient where CaHA might be considered.

Am I suitable for dermal fillers?

Most healthy adults are suitable for dermal filler treatment. There are certain contraindications — including pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection in the treatment area, certain autoimmune conditions, and some medications — which is why a medical consultation is essential before any treatment begins. A good practitioner will never proceed without fully assessing your suitability first. Book a free consultation at Dawn Clinic to discuss your suitability in confidence.
