Loose Skin After Weight Loss in Penarth & Cardiff: Why It Happens and What Can Help

Losing weight, especially quickly, can change the skin as well as the body: the face can look less full, and the skin can feel looser than before. This guide, from Dawn Clinic in Penarth, explains why that happens, what starting early can sensibly mean for your skin, and which skin-focused options, including Volulift and NeoGen, are worth knowing about.

This guide puts the skin first for anyone in Cardiff or Penarth who has been looking into loose skin, or a change in the face, after weight loss: what is happening, what may be worth doing early, and where the honest limits lie. It links to our skin care pages for home care and to the treatments mentioned below.

How does weight loss change the skin and the face?

Rapid weight loss, however it happens, can leave the face looking less full and the skin looser. A 2025 systematic review of 23 articles describes volume loss in the cheeks, temples and jawline, along with sagging skin. It suggests the changes are likely a consequence of fast loss that collagen remodelling has not kept pace with. The research is still limited: only three of the articles were cohort studies with a comparison group.

The face is only part of the picture. Our NeoGen page describes a skin treatment used on both the face and the body.

Even when the weight loss is welcome, watching your face or skin change can be unsettling, and it is reasonable to want a straight answer about what helps.

Which options do practitioners discuss for loose skin after weight loss?

Practitioners discuss four broad approaches after weight loss: treatments that support collagen, treatments that restore lost volume, skin-tightening technologies and, for structural change, surgery. The research behind most of them is rated as low quality, so a proper conversation about your own skin matters more than any single label.

  • Collagen support: NeoGen and Tixel are both heat-based treatments intended to encourage collagen production.
  • Volume restoration: dermal fillers are among the approaches practitioners discuss for volume lost from the face.
  • Skin tightening: technologies such as radiofrequency are discussed for loose skin.

Which of these suits you depends on how much volume has changed, how loose the skin feels and what you want to achieve. Where the skin is very loose or the structure has changed significantly, surgery is the route that addresses it, and non-surgical treatment may not be enough. If a doctor or other health professional is supporting your weight loss, speak to them before you change anything about that plan. Dawn can then advise on the skin side of things.

Can you look after your skin before weight loss begins?

Some people choose to start caring for their skin as soon as a weight-loss programme begins. The independent research behind this guide has not shown that a routine started beforehand prevents later changes, so early care is best seen as a personal choice, and no result can be promised.

Dawn Clinic stocks Volulift, a cream that Dawn says is designed to be started before weight loss begins. It is not a treatment: you apply it yourself at home. Dawn can tell you more about Volulift, and its price, at a full consultation.

Whatever you are considering, a few questions are worth putting to any practitioner or product maker:

  • Evidence: ask what research supports it and who carried that research out.
  • Timescale: ask how long it usually takes before any difference might show.
  • Downtime: ask what the days after treatment are likely to involve.
  • Limits: ask what it cannot do for your skin.

A clear, specific answer to all four is a better sign than a confident promise.

What does a NeoGen treatment involve?

The manufacturer describes NeoGen as using pulses of nitrogen plasma energy that act on the deeper layers of the skin and encourage new collagen and elastin. Our NeoGen page lists skin laxity among the concerns it is used for, alongside fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation, and describes treatment of both face and body.

Time and recovery depend on the energy level. On our NeoGen page, a lower-energy session takes 30 to 60 minutes and is followed by two to four days of redness, while a higher-energy session takes 45 to 90 minutes after numbing cream and is followed by seven to ten days of tightness and peeling. Recovery varies between people. Dawn will assess whether NeoGen is suitable for you, and will recommend the energy level and number of sessions, at your consultation.

How do other treatments fit alongside?

Tixel is a second heat-based option: our page describes heat used to rejuvenate, resurface and tighten the skin, and lists tightening around the eyes among its uses. Weight loss can also affect hair, and the NHS names it as one possible cause of hair loss, so it is worth mentioning any shedding to your GP first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my face look different after losing weight?

Volume can reduce around the jaw, temples and cheeks as weight comes down, and the skin above may sit looser as a result. Volume and skin quality are separate questions, and each may call for a different approach. The research is still limited, so the useful starting point is a look at your own face with Dawn.

Is it too late to start once the weight has gone?

It is not too late to ask for advice. Starting early is a personal choice, and the independent research we looked at does not show that it prevents later changes. Some people wait until the weight has settled, which is also a reasonable time to take stock. The options in this guide can be discussed at any stage, and Dawn will advise on timing.

Is Volulift a treatment?

No. Volulift is a cream that you apply yourself, and Dawn can explain where it fits alongside anything done in the clinic.

Does NeoGen hurt?

Higher-energy sessions begin with numbing cream. Comfort depends on the energy level and on you, and Dawn will talk it through before you decide.

Who is NeoGen suitable for?

Suitability depends on your skin, your medical history and what you want to treat, so Dawn assesses these at consultation before advising whether NeoGen is right for you and at what energy level.

Can weight loss affect my hair as well as my skin?

Yes. According to the NHS, weight loss is one possible trigger of hair loss, so shedding is worth mentioning to your GP. Hair care and skin care are separate questions, and your appointment can cover either or both.

This guide is general information about skin and does not replace advice from your doctor or other healthcare professional. NeoGen and the other treatments mentioned are cosmetic procedures, and Dawn agrees what is suitable with you individually, so no change to your skin can be promised.
